2007 Governor's Conference on Management of the Illinois River System Scheduled

 

The Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) is one of 60 groups cosponsoring the 11th Biennial Governor's Conference on the Management of the Illinois River System. "The Illinois River-Continuing Our Commitment" will be October 2-4 at Peoria's Holiday Inn City Centre Hotel.

 

The conference is designed to bring together concerned citizens, agricultural, conservation, and environmental organizations, industry and government representatives, educators, and resource management professionals. It opens with a meeting of the Illinois River Coordinating Council chaired by Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn, followed by a free public forum starting at 6:30 p.m. on October 2.

 

Featured keynote luncheon speakers will be Jon Scholl, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (October 3) and John Wiens, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) (October 4), in celebration of TNC's 50th anniversary in Illinois. Conference topics on public issues will range from stormwater management, restoration projects, and private-public partnerships for river monitoring to natural disasters, including flooding, drought, and the Gulf Coast experience and its implications for Illinois. Panels will discuss nature-based tourism, prehistory and archeology of the river valley, floodplain restoration, and dam removal and safety issues. Several sessions will focus on Asian carp and the Illinois River. Speakers representing state and federal agencies and organizations will share their focus and vision. Exhibits will highlight the work of the various groups. A special workshop will feature new technology applications for river studies and offer networking opportunities.
