The William C. Ackermann Scholarship recognized an undergraduate junior/senior or graduate civil and environmental engineering student at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, who was preparing for a career devoted to the protection and wise utilization of water resources. The successful applicant maintained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and demonstrated a desire to pursue graduate studies or a career path in a water resources related field. The scholarship award of $1,000 was paid at the beginning of the spring semester.

To honor this renowned scientist, scholar, manager, and educator, the Illinois State Water Survey and the Nature of Illinois Foundation established the William C. Ackermann Memorial Endowment in 1990.

Beginning in 1993 and remaning active for a decade, the Ackermann Endowment was used to provide a scholarship that helped support aspiring student scientists at the University of Illinois. The scholarship encouraged students to take up the spirit of Dr. Ackermann and follow his path in public service and research in water resources.

     WILLIAM C ACKERMANN WAS BORN on October 7, 1913 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and graduated with honors as a civil engineer from the University of Wisconsin in 1935. He served as a water resources engineer with the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1935 to 1954 and then headed the Watershed Hydrology Section of the U.S. Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland.

He became Chief of the Illinois State Water Survey in 1956 and carried a joint appointment as Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He held both positions until his retirement in 1979. Dr. Ackermann continued to play a pivotal role in water resources planning in Illinois even after retirement, with consulting work, service on state committees, and teaching. As Executive Director of the Illinois State Water Plan from 1980 to 1987, he guided the efforts that produced the Illinois Groundwater Protection Act.

William C. Ackermann died on June 9, 1988, at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife Margaret, his three children and their spouses, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
